09:00 — FontLab
FontLab course for yesterdays students. The course went really well, we broke the world record (50 minutes!)
14:00 — FontLab again
FontLab course for late arrivals
15:00 — Presentation
Presentation of the actual concept situation:
- Erkki — Surprise people who use it. Graffiti is a very strong, fashionable thing. The link with typography is very clear. What’s the difference between a normal typeface and graffiti. Graffiti is many things: very styled artworks, tags, bathroom writing. The meme escapes definition, but you have to find a general direction.
- Tom — Want to make a typeface, based on forms of ice melting, nice negative shapes. Also, some actions and ligatures in the font.
- Suvi — How to make words out of cell forms. The final font will use the ligature method so that it will change based on the letters. Cancer cells and mutations. Organic memes. Define behaviour. Fight!
- Anna — “When teeth go bad”. Holes in teeth. Fusing pixel-fonts with organics. I really want to draw funny-looking letters.
- Markus — Health issue. Product itself. Make typeface from longues, or cigarette smoke, or matches. Light: healthy longues, bold: unhealthy longues, extra bold: cancer longues.
- Laura — fashion, jeans: Like to typeface . All fonts could grow thin, and my font will be the only one left!
- Naoise O Conchubhair — thinking about car design. Differences between car from erope, japan, america. Typeface that when you write very quickly, elements of a sportscar. If you slow down, get a slower car. Dodge cars Ameria have website, nitro, . Audi, standard sans-serif. Typeface for car brands is different. (Car tuning perhaps? — Lucas)
- Valtteri — the meme is now evil — visualization of evil. Is art evil? Animals, the bat is described as evil, but it’s only a flying mouse. Typeface weights will be vvil, semi-evil and super-evil. (Lots of evils! — Lucas)
- Anna — meme is now arts. Drawn by hand. How can I connect this with fonts?
- Gloria — One meme communicates to another meme. Grows up into a complex form, which changes constantly, and evolves. There are constant different forms. It will be an interactive piece.
- Jenny — Soundtracks — destroy some words. Song in background, animation that misunderstands the words and makes something out of it (We actually built speech recognition in NodeBox — Frederik)
Lucas’s wise words:
The question throughout the workshop seems to be: what do we have to do? Lucas, Tom en Frederik showed FontLab, NodeBox, conceptual ideas and all kinds of projects.
You have to do what you like: If you don’t like all the conceptual thinking, but just like to make a typeface, just make a typeface!
We are really interested how certain memes influence the typeface. We’ll make sure that all the information, in the end, all comes together.
You can also start in the other direction: instead of going from concept to action, you can also think about what you want to do, and find an idea that matches that.
Don’t immediately start thinking about the product.
The wall: good thing, go on a weekend. The idea will stay there, the problem is there. And at a certain moment, an idea pops out.
